| Function | Established to assist the Mediator and the Truce Commission in supervising
the observance of the truce in Palestine. Since then, UNTSO has performed various tasks
entrusted to it by theSecurity Council, including the supervision of the General Armistice
Agreements of 1949 and the observation of the ceasefire in the Suez Canal area ( I-L-MAC,
I-S-MAC, E-I-MAC,HKJ-I-MAC) and the Golan Heights following the Arab-Israeli war of June
1967. At present, UNTSO assisted and cooperated with UNDOF on the Golan Heights in
the Israel-Syria sector (OGG - Observer Group Golan and ODD - Observer Detachment
Damascus), and UNIFIL in the Israel-Lebanon sector (OGL - Observer Group Lebanon). UNTSO
still mantains an office in Cairo (OG-E). UNTSO was also present in the Egypt-Israel sector in the Sinai. After the war of 1973, E-I- MAC became UNLOCA (UN Liaison Office in Cairo, then merged with OGS - C to form the OG- E Observer Group Egypt) and UNMOs were attached to UNEFII mission (OGS - Observer Group Sinai, with OGS-C - Cairo and OGS - J Jerusalem offices). UNTSO maintained offices in Beirut (OGB - Observer Group Beirut, with UNLOB - UN Liaison Office Beirut) and Damascus. HJK-I-MAC (with Liaison Office in Amman - UNLOA) was closed in 1994. UNTSO also provided cadres of Military Observers for the initial set-up of UNGOMAP, UNIMOG, UNIKOM and UNPROFOR. |
